is in midland city, alabama, once again this morning. gio? >> reporter: dan, good morning. this is now day five of this hostage standoff, it's happening just behind that white building that you see there. now, today, we're getting the details about how it all started from the children who were there and saw it all happen. this morning, a photo of the man who police said launched a dramatic hostage standoff. jimmy lee dykes has been holding a 5-year-old named ethan against his will in an underground bunker since tuesday. communicating with negotiators through the pipe. >> i looked up and he's talking about threatening to kill us all or something. >> reporter: it all started when dykes stormed onto this school bus, killed the driver and kidnapped the child. >> he said, i'll kill you all. he said, i just want two kids. >> reporter: they were on that bus. they said that dykes got on and gave the driver what appeared to be a gift of broccoli and a note and then demanded two children. >> the bus driver kept saying, just please get off the bus. he said, no. so, he just tried to back up and he pulled o

, the biggest of the winter, on track for the northeast. could it be a lot of snow headed for some major cities? guess who we're going to ask. sa sam. >> models started to show this last night. we've had a split flow in the jet stream. we've had a northern jet and a southern jet. this has been small nuisancemakers and storms. but what begins to happen is those two positions start to phase together. let me get back to the graphic. i want to show you -- max, will you run that through. to the eastern side. here's what happens. these two lows that are right now, really far apart, get really close in sync and phase off the eastern seaboard. where this happens depends who gets snow and who gets rain. it's going to happen from the carolinas towards probably boston. wherever this happens, there's a lot of snow with this storm and southern rain. there will be mixing, as well. as far as exact totals, we're not going to do that tonight into tomorrow. buffalo, albany, 6 to 12-inch snowfalls. new york, 3 to 6 for that area. philly, a little less. 1 to 3. boston, 12 to 24 inches of snow. some places in maine

-old was in imminent danger. abc's gio benitez has the latest from midland city, alabama. gio, good morning. >> reporter: amy, good morning. so often, we're telling stories with truly tragic endings. but this day is different. this story is about a little boy's rescue. overnight, 5-year-old ethan, seen here in a photo obtained exclusively by abc news, was evaluated at a nearby hospital. he arrived sitting up on a stretcher. and this morning, his family tells abc news, he is in good spirits and appears unharmed. even playing with his toy dinosaur. >> ethan, he is doing fine. he's laughing, joking, playing, eating. >> reporter: the fbi says, after a week-long standoff, it finally made the call monday to raid the homemade, underground bunker, where 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes was holding the child hostage. sources tell abc news, the decision came after agents managed to insert a small, high-tech camera into the bunker to monitor dykes' movements. >> mr. dykes was holding a gun. fbi agents, fearing the child was in imminent danger, entered the bunker and rescued the child. >> reporter: in a mat
